A Clear Price, Before the Work BeginsEvery project is different, and the work required to bring a story where it needs to go can vary. Your price will always be based on the scope of work we agree upon together.You will know the price before we begin. I will provide a clear quote before we agree to work together, so there are no surprises waiting at the end of the road.The agreed price is the price. I will not increase your cost once work has begun unless you choose to change the scope of the project. If the work changes, I will explain what has changed and provide a new quote for your approval before proceeding.Sometimes we begin with a sample. If I offer to edit a chapter at no charge so we can better understand the work ahead, the final estimate may be adjusted based on the time and effort that sample requires. Even then, I will never begin the full project without first giving you a firm price and receiving your agreement.You should always know what you're agreeing to. Good work begins with clear expectations, and I believe the price should be just as clear as the work itself.
Developmental Editing:
Your story has a foundation. Let's make sure it can carry the weight of everything you're building on top of it.
Developmental editing looks at your manuscript as a whole—how its structure, characters, pacing, themes, world, and narrative direction work together.
Where is the story strongest?
Where does it lose momentum?
Are the characters making choices that feel believable?
Does the structure support the story you're trying to tell?
Are the themes coming through as intended?
And most importantly: is the manuscript becoming the story you intended to write?
My role is not to rewrite your story for you. It is to help you see what is already there, identify where it can become stronger, and give you a clear path toward revision. I’ll read your manuscript multiple times, leaving in-line comments to highlight areas for improvement and point out what is working. I’ll also write an editorial letter covering big-picture elements to help guide you through your next draft.

Manuscript Evaluation:
Sometimes you don't need someone working through the manuscript with you. You need someone to step back, read the whole thing, and tell you what they see.
A Manuscript Evaluation provides a comprehensive assessment of your completed or substantially completed manuscript.
Rather than making extensive edits throughout the document, I examine the manuscript as a complete work and provide a detailed evaluation of what is working, what may be holding the story back, and where revision could have the greatest impact.
The goal is clarity.
You should finish the evaluation with a better understanding of what your manuscript is doing, where it succeeds, where it needs work, and what to tackle next.

Turnaround time: Around 2 to 3 weeks. Weekly updates are provided while working together.
Story Consultation:
Not every story problem can be solved by marking up a manuscript. Sometimes you need to talk it through.
You and I will have a collaborative conversation about your story, your ideas, and the problems you're trying to solve. It can happen before the manuscript is written, while you're working through a difficult chapter, or when you've reached the end and aren't sure how to bring everything together.
Maybe you're trying to find the beginning.
Maybe you're stuck in the middle.
Maybe you know exactly where the story needs to end but can't find the path to get there.
Maybe a character isn't working, the plot has stopped moving, or your world has grown beyond what you originally planned.
Maybe you'd like a second set of eyes on a chapter before moving forward—or someone to help you understand why a particular chapter, beginning, middle, or ending isn't quite doing what you want it to do.

Beta Reading:
A story can make perfect sense in your head and still leave a reader wondering, waiting, or turning the page for the wrong reasons. Beta Reading gives you an honest look at your manuscript through the eyes of a reader—what drew me in, what held my attention, what confused me, and where the story lost its momentum.
I'll read your manuscript as a reader first, paying attention to the experience rather than marking every sentence for revision. You'll receive thoughtful feedback on the moments that worked, the places that could be strengthened, and the questions your story left behind. You know your story better than anyone. My job is to tell you how it felt to discover it.
Investment: $0.003 per word

Raventhorn began with a simple idea: creative work deserves to be treated as a craft.Stories aren't just words on a page. They're things we build, shape, test, break apart, and sometimes rebuild from the foundations.Raventhorn grew from that way of thinking.The studio brings together two sides of the same impulse: the desire to create, and the desire to help other people create. That means editing stories, talking through problems, building strange physical things, writing, experimenting, and learning how ideas become something real.The Story Studio is where that philosophy is applied to writing. It exists for writers who have a story worth pursuing but need another perspective to help bring it into focus.The Workshop is where ideas leave the page. It's where projects like Warwick live—projects that require fabrication, engineering, problem-solving, and a willingness to figure things out along the way.And the Journal is where we get to stop building for a moment and think about the work itself.Raventhorn isn't built around the idea that creativity should be effortless.Quite the opposite.Good work takes patience. Meet C.T. Mathews
I'm C.T. Mathews—the writer, editor, builder, and general troublemaker behind Raventhorn Studio.I've spent years studying writing, not because I have a degree hanging on the wall, but because I wanted to understand how stories work. I've written, rewritten, read, studied, experimented, and occasionally discovered that the best way to understand a problem is to take it apart and see what's inside.That same instinct follows me into everything else I make.I'm a journeyman electrician by trade, which has probably influenced the way I approach creative work more than I realized. I like figuring out how things fit together. I like solving problems. I like understanding why something isn't working rather than simply covering up the symptom.And I like making things.Sometimes that means a manuscript.Sometimes it means a story that has been stuck in my head for years.Sometimes it means deciding that an eight-foot-tall creature from an animated series should probably exist in the real world—and then actually trying to build it.Raventhorn grew out of all of those things.I don't believe good editing is about telling another writer how to write their story.
